| | Song To A Caddo Woman Writing/Poem: | SONG TO A CADDO WOMAN Great Spirit smiles upon you this day, Caddo Woman, Woman of times long past.
I can see from the bones of your face- Sweetly you smiled, In those days when you walked these gentle knolls, These soft slopes. I can see you walked in beauty and grace.
Whoever you were Whoever you are, No more must you wait In the stuffiness of some white man's garage, Or under some bed as he sleeps over your bones.
No more must you wait In a zipped up plastic bag In the darkness of some white man's unsanctified closet.
No more must you be an idle curiosity, Held in some stranger's hands, As he contemplates the certainty of his own death.
Your Spirit sings to me today.
It brings me sadness That some robber of graves Stole your bones And your adornments From the place where your people wept, Consecrated the ground, And laid your earthly remains To what they thought to be Eternal rest and peace.
With our implements and with our hands, We have dug for you this day On the ancient grounds of your people A new place of rest. We have consecrated it. We pray it to be a safe place, Out of reach From the unholy, mindless plundering Of vandals.
We have brought sage From a sacred place far away.
With the feathers of an eagle We have smudged your new grave.
We have smudged your bones And returned them to the Earth That so long ago brought you to life.
In our hearts We have each sung our chants and songs for you, And we have heard the song of joy Your spirit sings to us.
I hear your spirit sing to me.
Great Spirit smiles upon you this day, Caddo Woman- Woman of times past.
May you be with your people. May you abide in peace and dignity As you make your journey Through the timeless winds of forever
