| Illusion Description: | This stylized image may represent several things. At first glance, it appears to be a depiction of a mask with spiral eyes and wavy beard. The mineral sediment and lichen naturally forming on the rock surface seems to drift across the forehead of this mask, partially obscuring the geometric cloud motifs at the top. As our glance becomes a gaze, we notice the beard is not hair but actually lightning bolts flashing down from rain clouds. Soon we discover the human figure is on the right; with this discovery the lightning bolts becomes the legs of many figures joined in a line dance. Now we are no longer sure of the meaning of the image before us. However, all of the images present are symbols of rain. The concentric circles and "vee" shaped pattern are known as rain symbols. Is it possible this is a mask of a rain deity or a depiction of a rain dance? The answer to this has vanished with the shaman that created this mysterious image.
This site is a perfect example of the deep mystery shrouding these ancient petroglyphs. What are they? What do they mean? Is this a record of a past event or a prediction of the future? Are these images prayers or simply the work of an ancient artist? While I ponder these unanswerable questions I recall something a Native American said to me as I squinted my eyes in the afternoon sun, attempting to focus on the petroglyphs before me. "You can only see what the spirits allow you to see...at certain times one image is visible while another remains unseen. As the sun makes its journey across the heavens, when the hour and season is right, only then will the other images be revealed." |
